It's been an exciting week for us in kindergarten: the chicks hatched! We were so lucky to be able to watch two different chicks hatch. Both happened rather quickly and we're glad to have had that experience.
We did a lot of writing about chicks. Our focus was on narrative writing. We asked: what happened this week? what happened during a hatch? We were able to have a beginning, middle, and end in our stories. We added those transition words like first and next, too.
Narrative writing wasn't the only type of writing we did; we also wrote opinions. How many of us decided we liked having chicks for a week? How many of us didn't? One student wrote "I like the little chicks because their chirping is cute!" Another writer thought "I liked having the chicks because we got to see the chicks hatch. Watching the chicks hate is fun!" However, not all of us enjoyed the experience. "I do not like the chicks because they are chirping all the time. They are annoying little animals!" wrote a student.
Anyone who was comfortable with holding a chick was able to, and everyone did! Those of us who wanted a second turn got it. Here is a peek into the experience:
Having the chicks helped us with our science thinking as well. We filled in our science notebooks with observations and new learning about chicks.
Last but not least, we practiced our reading thinking skills by making comparisons, making connections, and making predictions.
Ask your child about his or her favorite part of the chicks!
