Building 3-D Shapes

We are learning about shapes.  For the most part, we have our 2-D shapes down (like rectangle, square, circle, etc.).  So--we've been working on 3-D shapes.  Look what we can do with toothpicks and marshmallows:



We know sphere, cylinder, cube, cone, and pyramid.  What might be fun is to go on a 3-D shape hunt at home.  What 3-D shapes can you find at home?

What Would You Do to Make a Color Zoo?

While discussing shapes, we read Lois Ehlert's book Color Zoo.


We loved how she put shapes together to make animals, and we decided to do the same thing!

Can you see a monkey?


How about a squirrel?

What about some kitty cats?






Can you see a pelican?


Or two owls?



How about some elephants?


Do you see a fox?


Or a mouse?


What about some tigers?





Can you see a duck?


How about some lions?




And we can't forget man's best friend!

Ask Your Child . . .

Ask your child about who belongs in you family.  A father, mother, sister, brother?  Who else?

Ask your child for nicknames for family members. What do you use for mother?  Is it mommy or mama or something else?

Ask you child how a mother and a father are the same and different?  How are a brother and a sister the same and different?

Belong, mother, father, brother, and sister were the vocabulary words for this week.

Learning About 3-D Shapes

Our math class is getting really good at identifying 2-D shapes.  Now we're turning our attention to 3-D shapes.  

We have been playing a version of the game Memory:






Our goal was to match up the shape (both 2-D and 3-D) to a real-life object.
