Our Week in Review

Has your child told you that we're super readers? Yep! We even had a visit from Reader Man. He brought us some pointers for us to use while reading to amp up our pointer power. We point to each word, one at a time to read. We've learned that we have snap word power as well. Snap word power helps us stay on track with pointer power because we can check the words we know with what words we are saying. Private and partner reading have been so fun with our new pointers this week.

We're also working on paying attention to our thinking while reading. This week we focused on making predictions. In addition, we talked about how our thinking can change while reading. One of the books we read, So Much!, helped us think about the characters, too. We loved that book this week!

Did you know that we are writers as well? We've learned that writers add more and more to the page, and writers write more than one page. Whoa! We're doing a nice job with thinking about the sounds we hear and writing the letter that goes along with that sound, especially at the beginning. We're working on putting spaces between words, too. I think writing workshop might be a favorite part of the day.

We're learning to listen to stories in math and solve the problem. We also worked on sorting, counting, graphing, and comparing with pattern blocks. Ask your child about what makes a triangle a triangle, too! Lastly, we're continuing to work on learning that we can make numbers in different ways.

That wraps it up for this week. So sorry there aren't any pictures to go along with this week's events. They are my favorite part, too!

Week in Review

I'm not sure, but if I would have to guess, I would think the most favorite thing this week would be book shopping. This week the students got their very own book bins and they filled them with just right books. Ask your child which book he or she can't wait to read!

We've been working on these things during our reading time:

  • reading the pictures, remembering what happened, and reading the words
  • reading the exact words more and more
  • sounding like the characters
  • finding the words we know in the books and reading them
  • retelling what happened from the beginning to the end
  • noticing which parts of the story are told through the pictures and which parts are read through the words
We can't wait to share what we've worked on with our partners. This week we had a special partner time. We read with friends in the other kindergarten classes. What fun!

In math we worked a lot with sorting. Some of us recognized that we can sort the same things in different ways, like by color, by shape, or by size, to name a few examples. We've also reviewed our 2-d shapes, especially circles and triangles. Finally we learned about ten frames.

Tiger Teams were a big hit, too. Ask your child about his or her favorite parts of the week!
