We have been busy with lots of reading this week. There is so much to learn! One of the things we've been working on knowing how written words work. We've been learning that readers read words starting at the top and working across the page from left to right. Although we don't know all of the words just yet, we've been working on learning which word to read next. This is something your child can practice at home. What word do readers read next? What happens at the end of a line? What happens at the end of a page?
We've been learning that readers move about the world in a special way. We've learned that readers see words, they think about what those words could mean, and then they read them. This week we've paid attention to the pictures, too, to help us think of what words we might read. Then we worked hard on learning, too. So when readers are reading, they are looking, thinking, reading, and learning. The last concept that we've worked on this week is that readers read the whole book from cover to cover, page by page, not too fast!
We've been doing great with reading on our own, and this week we wanted to share what we've been reading with partners. I have been so impressed with our partner reading behaviors this week! Yay! This would be something to work on at home, too. After your child has some private reading time, have him or her share with you what he or she read. We're working on telling our partners what we've learned or what our book is about. If we've been reading a fiction book, we've been working on retelling.
We're always working on handwriting. One of the things we work on with handwriting is proper formation. Old habits can die hard! We're doing really well getting letters the right size and the right shape for this point in the year. Another thing we've been working on is matching the sounds the letters make with the letter name. So far this year we've talked about the sounds of over 15 letters!
We learned another new fun game in math. You'll have to ask your child which game he or she prefers: Gotcha! or Count and Sit (we also have called it Target Number). Both games can be played at home. Ask your child how to play! We've been working on learning what numbers look like, what they mean, and comparing numbers, too. Another thing we did this week was look at our birthdays. We made birthday cakes for our birthdays, and we learned how we can tell which month has the most birthdays, the least, the same, etc. We also worked on identifying first and last, too. One of our big goals of the year is counting to 100 by 1s without skipping a single number. That's something to practice at home, too. Finally, we worked on community building by learning how to collaborate to solve problems.
Whew! What a big week!
